“The
Block Viewer for Oracle” empowers
you with knowledge about your database not provided
by any other vender (including Oracle). By directly
viewing Oracle blocks on disk via a graphical
user interface or via proprietary meta-views accessible
through standard SQL, you can see precisely how
your data is structured on disk. Please refer
to any one of the Oracle internals articles prepared
with the Block Viewer or download this concise
PDF which
illustrates seven specific ways the block viewer
can help a production system - from determining
index health to the recovery of lost data.

“Oracle
Salvage” is the only commercially
available tool that can read rows directly out
of an Oracle data file without an Oracle instance
running. Oracle Salvage maybe the difference between
keeping a production database up and current or
having to revert to a backup - losing more valuable
uptime and current data.
Oracle Salvage can also be used in non-crisis
situations as a method of extracting data from
production Oracle data files but in a non-production
environment. For example, instead of running the
resource intensive bulk unload on the production
machine, a database administrator can simply take
one of the data file backups he just made, move
it to the non-production machine, and then, using
osalvage, perform the bulk unload on the non-production
machine.
